Ella fu.

Quello che per l’800 fu il 5 maggio, per il mondo contemporaneo sarà per sempre l’8 settembre.

Non esistono confini geografici o confini di pensiero che possano fermare la scossa che la tremenda notizia giunta dalla dimora estiva della Sovrana del Regno Unito provoca così in terra, come nelle persone che la abitano.

Si chiude, nuovamente, dopo quasi 500 anni, un’Età Elisabettiana.

Un’era iniziata nell’anno 1952, in cui una giovane donna di 25 anni fu chiamata a prendere le redini di un Paese che, seppur unito nella fiducia verso la figura del proprio Re Giorgio VI, era stato spezzato da una tremenda guerra cui ella stessa aveva attivamente contribuito a porre fine. E tanto in tempi di guerra, come in tempi di pace, la Principessa Elisabetta, prima, e la Regina Elisabetta II, dopo, divenne naturalmente una figura amata dal Suo popolo. E così rimase nelle menti e nei cuori del popolo Britannico durante tutti i cambiamenti della Gran Bretagna negli anni, e il cambiamento della Sua stessa Monarchia, che la Regina contribuì fortemente a modernizzare e tenere al passo coi tempi, pur sempre mantenendo il carattere di imparzialità che caratterizza l’Istituzione, tanto quanto caratterizzava la Sua Sovrana.

Elisabetta II, per Grazia di Dio, del Regno Unito di Gran Bretagna e Irlanda del Nord e dei suoi altri reami e territori Regina, Capo del Commonwealth, Difensore della Fede, lascia il Suo Regno per entrare in un altro in cui l’attende un’altra figura altrettanto significativa e longeva, quella del Duca di Edimburgo, il Suo Philip, con cui ebbe la fortuna di condividere molti anni, a volte anche difficoltosi, ma pur sempre in unione, e con cui si ricongiunge ora, a poco più di un anno dalla di lui scomparsa.

Un cambio nel Regno che passa anche per il suo stesso inno nazionale, che dopo 70 anni torna ad augurare, come anche noi facciamo ora: lunga vita al Re.

E per la Regina che soleva levarsi ogni mattina al canto della cornamusa che un soldato suonava al di là della Sua finestra, ci tacciamo in profondo rispetto per il lutto della Famiglia Reale Britannica e del mondo tutto, pronunciando infine le parole che accompagnano i momenti degli addii più difficili entro ed oltre i confini di quello che fu, fino a pochi istanti fa, il Regno Unito di Sua Maestà La Regina Elisabetta II:

EULOGY TO HER MAJESTY

QUEEN ELIZABETH II OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

She was.

What the 5^th of May was for the 19^th century, the 8^th of September will forever be for the contemporary world.

There are no geographical boundaries or boundaries of thought that could stop the tremendous tremor that the news coming from the summer home of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom provokes on earth as it is in the people who live upon it.

After almost 500 years, an Elizabethan Age ends, again.

An era which began in the year 1952, when a young woman of 25 was called to take the reins of a country which, although united in the trust towards the figure of its own King George VI, had been shattered by a terrible war to which she had actively contributed to ending. And both in times of war, as in times of peace, Princess Elizabeth, first, and Queen Elizabeth II, later, naturally became a beloved figure for Her people. And so she remained in the minds and hearts of the British people throughout all the changes of Great Britain over the years, and the change of Her own Monarchy, which the Queen contributed greatly to modernising and keeping up with the times, while still maintaining the impartiality that characterises the Institution, as much as it characterised Her Sovereign.

Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, leaves Her Kingdom to enter another, where another equally significant and long-lived figure awaits, that of the Duke of Edinburgh, Her Philip, with whom She had the good fortune to share many years, even difficult at times, yet still in union, and with whom She now rejoins, just over a year after his death.

A change in the Kingdom that also passes for its own national anthem, which after 70 years returns to wish, as we do now: long live the King.

And for the Queen who would waken every morning to the song of the bagpipe that a soldier would play beyond Her window, we pay profound respect to the mourning of the British Royal Family and the whole world, finally uttering the words that accompany the most difficult moments of farewell within and beyond the borders of what was, until a few moments ago, the United Kingdom of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:
